31 Days to Finding Balance as a Home Manager :: Day 16 {You Can't 'Do It All'}

David Allen coined the above catch phrase.  He has been noted as one of the most influential thinkers on personal productivity.

He argues that the real challenge is not managing your time but maintaining your focus:
"If you get too wrapped up in all of the stuff coming at you, you lose your ability to respond appropriately and effectively. Remember, you're the one who creates speed, because you're the one who allows stuff to enter your life."
We live in a time in history that we have the distinct luxury of learning, experimenting and dabbling in anything that piques our interest.  The only problem is, time and energy do not expand.  Focus on your priorities and what you naturally do well.  Resist the urge to compare yourself to someone else that appears to do more than you, I guarantee there is probably something you do really well (and you enjoy doing it) that they don't.

How have you been doing with the Time Audit Exercise?

I'll be discussing more about balancing time and tasks this week...

  1. This sentence really struck me:
"Focus on your priorities and what you naturally do well."
especially..."and what you naturally do well."
I know bloggers are encouraged to write about what they love to do. Do you think what you naturally do well is the same as what you love to do?

  2. Yes, Donna, I would imagine that what most people do naturally well most likely also coincides with also being something they love/enjoy doing.

I just know for me personally there is a LOT that I think I 'would' enjoy doing, but it does not currently fit within the strengths I am trying to focus on in this particular season of life...

For example, I LOVE the idea of capturing memories and experiences and natural beauty through the art of photography. I think I've got a pretty good eye....If I applied the time and effort to learn even more, I think my composition and editing abilities would improve.

However, in this season of life I need to assess both my *priorities* (my current role as a mother to small children + trying to build and maintain a small business)as well as my desires to pursue personal interests that I have natural ability in.

So, at least for this season I can continue to practice taking pictures, and enjoy the process of cataloging them into photobooks, now probably isn't the time that I'll invest in growing in that natural ability or interest...

    Does that make sense?

Eventually my priorities will shift allowing for more time, and I'll be able to take a class so my enjoyment can grow all the more. :)

Great question - thanks for asking! :)

  3. Yes, it makes sense. Thanks!

But dabble a little every so often in the photography to 'keep the flame burning'. It can still be on the back burner as a low priority waiting for that more optimal time in your life. I've seen some of your work through this blog and you do have talent.

  4. Thanks Donna - I will surely continue to dabble - :)

    Cheers!
